Sugar Research Australia Independent Performance Review

Sugar Research Australia (SRA) is the industry's services body. SRA 'invests in and manages a portfolio of research, development and adoption projects that drive productivity, profitability and sustainability for the Australian sugarcane industry'.

SRA is obliged, under its statutory funding contract with government, to commission an independent review of its performance every four years. The review report must be provided to both the SRA Board and to government and then be made public on the company's website.

Forest Hill led SRA's first performance review in 2016. Forest Hill also conducted the 2020 review, in collaboration with Miracle Dog, Poimena Analysis and Rural Analytics. Both review processes involved:

  • The review of a large number of documents pertaining to the company
  • Establishment of a dedicated review website and email for receiving submissions
  • Consultation with a broad range of stakeholders, including sugarcane growers, millers, SRA staff and directors, government officers and service providers such as researchers
  • A workshop with the Executive Team
  • Development of the report and its presentation to the Board.

The most recent report, and SRA's response to it, can be downloaded from the SRA website.
